  31.  "Shareware" is a concept where you have an opportunity to try a software
  32.  program before  you  buy  it.  Shareware  is  comparable  to  commercial
  33.  software in quality, but not usually in  price.  Shareware  is  normally
  34.  much less expensive because the author has not spent the many thousands,
  35.  even millions,  of  dollars  on  advertising  that  commercial  software
  36.  companies do. Thus, the overhead is much less  and  your  cost  reflects
  37.  this. If you use a shareware program for a reasonable period of time you
  38.  are required to register it. Please honor the author's registration  fee
  39.  and register the programs you use. Many shareware programs  on  this  cd
  40.  required hundred's of hours to develop. Many of the programs you will be
  41.  using were written by authors who fully depend on the support of  honest
  42.  users to continue making affordable software.   Your  registration  does
  43.  count! ...not only to the author and his/her family, but also  when  you
  44.  register there are usually many additional benefits that are available.

  47.         *** Information on the file  view  and  retrieval  program   ***

  49.                                 CREAM.exe
  50.  
  51.  This is a view and retrieval program that will assist you in  retrieving
  52.  and  viewing the files on this disk,  along with their size,  date,  and
  53.  description. To run this program, simply type "Cream" and  press  enter.
  54.  There is no setup required. Cream.exe is in the directory with this file
  55.  you are reading now.  Cream.exe is  NOT  for use outside this cd. Please
  56.  do not place it for download on a BBS.
  57.  
  58.  The most unique and appreciated feature of the Cream of  the  Crop  view
  59.  and retrieval program (Cream.exe) is that it is the  only  such  program
  60.  that runs entirely on the cd. This means that you avoid setup procedures
  61.  that wasted time and disc space. The features that require  searches  on
  62.  the cd are loaded into memory  for  instant  results,  making  this  the
  63.  fastest program of its kind.
  64.  
  65.      The most notable feature is the option to display the files  in  the
  66.  Work Directory that have been  uncompressed  from  the  cd  ...AND  then
  67.  browse the text files or execute .EXE and .COM  programs  or  uncompress
  68.  .ZIP, .LZH and .ARJ archives that the author may have placed inside  the
  69.  archives that are on the cd. The browse program is very complete with 35
  70.  features including search, block mark for printing (or writing to disk),
  71.  text markers and Hex toggle... just to mention a few.  <F1> will display
  72.  a help menu with all the  features  available  with  the  menu  you  are
  73.  viewing. <Alt-D> drops to DOS from any menu.
  74.  
  75.  The default for Yes and No questions is in upper case.  For  example  if
  76.  you are prompted with a message saying: "Do you want to continue? [Y/n]"
  77.  Pressing any key except "N" or "n" will default  to  the  "Yes"  choice.
  78.  Sometimes there is a Yes, Quit, or any other key to start  over  option.
  79.  In this case any key other than "Y", "y", "Q" or "q" will allow  you  to
  80.  restart the operation.

  82.  The default Work Directory is on your C: drive and the  path  to  it  is
  83.  determined by the Volume Label of the cd  you  are  using.  If  you  are
  84.  working with Cream 10 the default path to your  Work  Directory  will be
  85.  C:\CREAM_10. You can override this default path by starting this program
  86.  with a command line parameter that contains a "custom default path"  ie.
  87.  "Cream  D:\TEMP"   Note: Only the default path or  custom  default  path
  88.  can be erased when you are prompted with the option to erase  your  Work
  89.  Directory at the "normal" conclusion of a  session.   This  is a  safety
  90.  feature to prevent regrettable mistakes.  You will not be prompted  with
  91.  this option and the files in your Work Directory will not be  erased  if
  92.  you terminate Cream with the <AltX> shortcut.

  94.  1.  Commands  that  are  available  with  almost  every  menu  include:
  95.  <F1> = Help           <AltX> = Exit       <AltD> = Drop to DOS
  96.  <ESC> = Return to previous menu           <AltW> = Work Directory
  97.  <AltM> Moves the files from the current Work Directory to a new directory
  98.  <Enter> = Process the highlighted/selected/tagged option(s)
  99.  
  100.  2. Additional commands that are available when viewing the Work Directory:
  101.  <Enter> Execute, browse or uncompress the highlighted file.
  102.  <AltP> Print the highlighted file.
  103.  
  104.  3. Additional commands that are available when viewing a category of files:
  105.  Pressing alpha-numeric keys serve as a search feature.
  106.  <Enter> Copy or Uncompress tagged files
  107.  <AltS> Search for key words or phrases in the file descriptions.
  108.  <AltC> Clear search markers
  109.  
  110.  Note: The option to unarchive files does not allow the root directory on
  111.  your C: drive to be used as a target directory. This is a safety feature
  112.  to protect your system's configuration files Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
  113.  from accidentally being overwritten with examples that may have been in-
  114.  cluded in an archive on the cd.

  117.                         Notes on File Compression
  118.  
  119.  The programs on this cd are compressed with Pkzip from  Pkware  Inc.  If
  120.  you use Pkware for any purpose other than the one  provided  to  extract
  121.  files from this cd from within Cream.exe you are  required  to  register
  122.  your own copy.
  123.  
  124.  The programs on this and other shareware  cd  discs  are  compressed  in
  125.  order to save space and keep all the necessary  support  files  together
  126.  with the program that needs them  to  run.  Compression  also  makes  it
  127.  possible to include the same amount of data that would  require 3  or  4
  128.  cds in an uncompressed format.
  129.  
  130.  Many authors do not allow their programs to  be  distributed  under  the
  131.  shareware concept if they are not compressed - without  the  distributor
  132.  paying a fee for each disc distributed. This is because they  know  that
  133.  it is unlikely they will ever receive  any  registration  from  programs
  134.  that are distributed in a format that is already set  up  and  ready  to
  135.  run. Please support the shareware concept and register the programs that
  136.  you use.

  138.                               Extra Features!
  139.  
  140.  The files on this cd include the description inside the ZIP comment. You
  141.  can simply run "Pkunzip <filename> -c ="  to read the description of any
  142.  file.  This  feature makes it simple to build a description list of  the
  143.  files that have been removed from this disc.  The following command will
  144.  build a description listing of all the files that have been removed from
  145.  Cream of the Crop:            Pkunzip * -c = >  filename
  146.  
  147.  Note:  "Filename"  is the name of the file you wish to direct the output
  148.  into.  I have included a program named "TrimOut.exe" that can be used to
  149.  remove then nonessential information from a  rebuilt description file to
  150.  only leave the file name and description.   Execute  "TrimOut"  with the
  151.  name of the description file you have built as the first parameter. Your
  152.  work will be saved under the same file name except an "!" will begin the
  153.  new file name.  Example:  "TrimOut Files.bbs" ...will save the work into
  154.  a new file named  !files.bbs.
  155.  
  156.  Also included in the root directory is a program named AVGage.exe. This
  157.  program will calculate the average date of ALL the ZIP files on a cdrom
  158.  disc and return the average age/date of the disc. This utility can also
  159.  be used to find the average date of a group of files in a  subdirectory
  160.  or on a hard drive. To use this utility in that manner place it in  you
  161.  path and change to the directory you wish to process before you execute
  162.  AVGage.exe.
  163.  
  164.                             A Word of Caution
  165.  
  166.  All risks involved with using the programs on this cd are assumed by you
  167.  alone. Some programs on this cd, especially those  that  manipulate  the
  168.  data on your hard drive, (ie. optimizers and low level disk  management)
  169.  can potentially cause loss of data. Be careful!  Reading  the  docs  and
  170.  taking serious the  warnings  is  the  only  reasonable  thing  to  do.

  173.                            BBS Support Programs
  174.

  177.  Cream 10 has new features to assist Sysops in setting  up  and  running
  178.  Cream of the Crop online. All the automatic setup utilities  have  been
  179.  modified to identify and correctly setup Cream of the Crop with systems
  180.  running cd rom changers under a single drive letter. No manual  editing
  181.  will be necessary.  Most of the automatic setup utilities will allow  a
  182.  Sysop to insert the volume label before the  file  category  name.  For
  183.  example, "Games" can be displayed to the callers as "(Cream_10)  Games"
  184.  This feature will enable callers to more easily locate the latest files
  185.  and know the cd they are located on. This feature is not  available  on
  186.  all the automatic bbs setup utilities because the length  of  the  file
  187.  category description field afforded by the bbs is sometimes  too  short
  188.  to add this extra information.  This feature is optional  and  will  be
  189.  asked when running the programs and answering for the normal questions.

  191.  Cream 10 also has a Wildcat drop in database  (Look for  Cream_10.DRP -
  192.  located  in  the  root  directory)  to  assist  Wildcat BBS  Sysops  in
  193.  rapidly/easily setting up this cd.  Thanks to Gene Geiger for this help
  194.  and *NO* thanks to the folks at Mustang Software who promised technical
  195.  assistance when I met their staff at OneBBScon in Atlanta(94) AND again
  196.  in Tampa this year...AND ignored numerous messages I have left on their
  197.  support BBS over the past few years!

  199.  Cream 10 also has a new utility that will build the  control  file  for
  200.  RomDoor. Execute Romdoor.exe and answer the  questions.
  201.  
  202.  Cream 10 also has a new utility that will build the  control  file  for
  203.  EZrom and Sfrom. Execute EZ_SFrom.exe and answer the  questions.
  204.  
  205.  Cream 10 also has file descriptions in every directory under  the  name
  206.  File.bbs that have the extended portion of the file descriptions broken
  207.  up to resemble the Pcboard format.
  208.

  211.  If you run a Maximus, Proboard, Remote Access, Quick  BBS,  PcBoard,  or
  212.  Spitfire BBS one of the following programs  may?  automatically  set  up
  213.  this disk for your bbs file database structure in  only a  few  minutes.
  214.  Since the file base structures used by these  BBS's change frequently it
  215.  is likely that some of these programs may not work with a later release.
  216.  ALL of these programs will AUTOMATICALLY copy (and correctly format) the
  217.  Files.bbs from this cd to suit the structure of your bbs  and  increment
  218.  the file names, placing the "Files.<x>" ( or File<XX>.bbs in some cases)
  219.  into the directory you specify. Please backup your file data base before
  220.  you run any of these programs. For an extra  precaution,  you  can  copy
  221.  your file databases to a temporary  directory  and  use  your  temporary
  222.  directory to set up this disk. If the setup  is  satisfactory  when  you
  223.  view it with your BBS management program (or text editor) then  you  can
  224.  copy it to your BBS home directory. These programs are NOT  to  be  used
  225.  outside the scope of this cd rom disk. Please do not place them on a BBS
  226.  for downloading.
  227.  
  228.                                AnyStyle.exe
  229.  
  230.  If you run a BBS software that was not mentioned above this utility will
  231.  build file listing in almost _ANY_ format.   You may want to convert the
  232.  file descriptions into your favorite format even if you don't run a BBS.
  233.  This utility will do that.  You have numerous combinations of options to
  234.  choose from.  You can include or exclude the file size, and date columns
  235.  or commas in the file sizes _AND_ wrap the extended portions of the file
  236.  descriptions to comply with any format you like...  including  insertion
  237.  of control characters.   You also have 3 options as to the style of file
  238.  naming incrementing. Even with all these options it is still very simple
  239.  to operate.  Just execute  "AnyStyle"  from the directory with this file
  240.  you are reading now and answer the questions.
  241.  
  242.                                MX_Cream.exe
  243.  
  244.  This is the program to set up  Maximus  BBS.  Actually  it  builds  your
  245.  "Filearea.ctl" control file then you can run FB to compile the  changes.
  246.  It is important that your Filearea.ctl be correctly  formatted  so  that
  247.  the last area can be located to provide accurate file  naming  when  the
  248.  Files.bbs are reformatted and copied to your  fixed  media  path.  "Area
  249.  <X>" MUST begin on column #1 (at least  for  the  last  record  in  your
  250.  Filearea.ctl  control file).  Sorry  only   numeric   incrimination   is
  251.  supported. (ie. The  format:  Area  A,  Area  B,  Area  C,  etc  is  NOT
  252.  supported.) This program has several added options that will be  obvious
  253.  to you when you run it. You may want to read the section  of  your  docs
  254.  that explains the advantages and disadvantages  of  including  the  file
  255.  size and date column before you execute this program and  have  to  make
  256.  that decision.

  258.                                SF_Cream.exe
  259.  
  260.  This is the program to set up Spitfire BBS. You will need  to  know  the
  261.  path  to  your  Sffarea.dat  file  and  your  display  directory   where
  262.  "Sffiles.<x>" will be placed, before you run this program.  The extended
  263.  descriptions  will  be  automatically  formatted  with  the  #2  control
  264.  character for Spitfire when the Sffiles.<x> are being  created  in  your
  265.  display directory.

  267.                                QB_Cream.exe
  268.  
  269.  This is the program to set up Quick BBS. You will need to know the  path
  270.  to your Filecfg.dat and your "File list" path directory before  you  run
  271.  this program. When you use this program you will be given an  option  to
  272.  override the default and  select a  different  record  number  to  begin
  273.  setting up this disc. This option is dangerous if you do not  understand
  274.  its purpose.  If you have a empty record in your  file  data  base  (the
  275.  area name description field is keyed on to determine  an  empty  record)
  276.  QB_Cream will will find it first and assume that it has reached the  end
  277.  of your file settings. This record number will be  the  default  setting
  278.  used to begin setting up this cd. You should know the record number that
  279.  is your highest file area setting to verify (and correct  if  necessary)
  280.  the default setting. This option to use  your  own  default  setting  to
  281.  begin the setup of this cd is also useful if you wish to  _insert_  this
  282.  cd in place of one you are removing.  The cd  you  are  removing  _MUST_
  283.  have used at least 27 file areas  in  order  that  sufficient  space  be
  284.  available to insert the 27 file areas on this disc  without  overwriting
  285.  the next cd's file directory records.  If all this is unclear to you  it
  286.  would be a good idea to call 334-824-2552 for support.

  288.                                RA_Cream.exe
  289.  
  290.  This is the program to set up Remote Access version 2.0  or  later.  You
  291.  will need to know the path to your Files.ra and your  "Alternative  file
  292.  list path for read-only media" path before you run  this  program.  When
  293.  you use this program you will be given an option to override the default
  294.  and select a different record number to begin setting up this disc. This
  295.  option is dangerous if you do not understand its purpose.  If you have a
  296.  empty record in your file data base (the area name description field  is
  297.  keyed on to determine an empty record) RA_Cream will will find it  first
  298.  and assume that it has reached the  end  of  your  file  settings.  This
  299.  record number will be the default setting used to begin setting up  this

  312.  This is a simple program to _assist_ the setup of Pcboard BBS.  PC_Cream
  313.  will copy the Files.bbs file listings to the directory of your choice on
  314.  your hard drive * AND * increment the  file  listing  names,  ie.  Dir1,
  315.  Dir2,  Dir3  etc.  The  extended  description  portion   of   the   file
  316.  descriptions will be correctly formatted for Pcboard format. The listing
  317.  of the file area descriptions is included (under the name DIR)  in  this
  318.  directory.

  320.                                PB_Cream.exe
  321.  
  322.  This is the program to set up a Proboard BBS. You will need to know  the
  323.  path to your FileCfg.pro and the path to your "listing file"  directory.
  324.  Since Proboard (and the structure for FileCfg.pro) is written C and this
  325.  program is written in Pascal it is not easy to determine how  many  file
  326.  areas you currently have setup. If you are currently  incrementing  your
  327.  file listings in the File<x>.bbs naming  format  you  should  set  up  a
  328.  separate directory for this program to place the file listings for  each
  329.  version of Cream of the Crop. The file listings will be named File1.bbs,
  330.  File2.bbs etc. and the corresponding path and names of these files  will
  331.  be written to your FileCfg.pro. Remember to run  "Pbutil  FI"  when  you
  332.  finish to reindex your file base.   It has been reported  that  Proboard
  333.  cannot correctly display the filesize when commas are used. This program
  334.  will remove the commas from the filesize.

  336.                                 TB_Cream.exe
  337.  
  338.  This program will setup TBBS. Just run it and answer the questions.  It
  339.  will build the .FAR files and reformat the file listings to comply with
  340.  TBBS standards.

  342.                               RB_Cream.exe

  344.  This program will setup RBBS. Just run it and answer the questions.  It
  345.  will build the .DAT files and reformat the file listings to comply with
  346.  RBBS standards.

  348.                               Crm2tag.exe
  349.  
  350.  This program will setup TAG.  Just run it and answer the questions.  It
  351.  was written by Jonathan Murray  and  supplied freely to help his fellow
  352.  TAGBBS sysops set up any volume of Cream of the Crop. The file "Crm2tag
  353.  .doc" can be found in the directory with this file you are reading now.

  405.  your unmodified programs are distributed.

  409.  The files on this cd have been scanned for known viruses.  All  possible
  410.  efforts were made  to  prevent  commercial  software  from  accidentally
  411.  getting included on this disc. If you detect a virus or a  program  that
